Backeting Setup on the Nikon D80

Talking the D80 into bracketing is not easy.  First, let's identify the controls. The MENU button is clearly marked on the back of the camera to the left of the LCD display used for menus and pictures. The bracket button (BKT), command dial, and subcommand dial are shown below,

1. With the camera on, get into menu mode by pushing the menu button, then select SETUP MENU, then CSM/Setup menu, then Full.
2. Then go to options (pencil icon), item 13, and select AE + flash.
3. Exit menu mode and go into picture-taking mode.
4. Press and hold the BKT button, which is near the top left of the lens mount.
5. Rotate the command dial, the thumbwheel in front of the shutter, to select 3F -- for 3 bracketed exposures.
6. Rotate the subcommand dial, the thumbwheel back of the exposure LCD display, to select 2.0 -- that will yield +2, 0. -2 stops in the bracket sequence.
7. Release the BKT button.
8. Select program (P) mode. Bracketing does not function in AUTO mode.
9. Press the shutter three times to take the three exposure sequence. Be nice if the camera just took the three exposures automatically, as fast as possible, but it doesn't.

Because bracketing is disabled in AUTO mode, one way to turn the feature on and off is to switch between AUTO and P.  If you make a point of returning the camera to AUTO mode whenever you stop using it for HRDI, then you won't accidentally take underexposed and overexposed pictures at some later time, thinking the camera is working like a normal camera.

There are various permutations concerning the number, spacing, and order of the exposures. The D80 manual is here on line at the Nikon site.
Bracketing is discussed on pp 56-57. The manual assumes you know several of the steps.
